Emergent Curriculum ~ Magnets & Magnetism

From a Preschooler's Perspective

While I was assessing a preschooler's math skills, she informed me that, "Zero means something, but it's doesn't really mean anything!"

Emergent Curriculum ~ Magnets & Magnetism

For young children, there is something magical about magnets. This excitement about objects with magnetic properties makes them a perfect choice for inclusion in our emergent curriculum. When magnets are made available, preschoolers choose to experiment with them in unique and creative ways. We have many different types of magnetic materials in the preschool classroom. In addition to allowing children to explore the scientific properties of magnets, these materials promote learning in other areas of our curriculum such as mathematics and early literacy. And while exploring collaboratively with magnets, the preschoolers are also increasing their social and language skills as well. All while having a great time, as usual, playing and learning in school!
