Tall Towers

Tall Towers

It all started when two preschoolers decided one day to see how tall they could build a tower out of large pegboard pegs. Other preschoolers observed them doing this and, noticing how much fun they were having, decided to build tall towers of their own. Being naturally creative, the preschoolers, over the course of the next few months, created tall towers out of all different kinds of materials - even rest mats! While having a great time doing this, they were also deeply engaged in learning in many areas of the preschool curriculum including the language, social-emotional, mathematics, creative expression, and motor domains.

This long-term project perfectly illustrates how our play-based, emergent preschool curriculum works. Our activities are child-centered, child-directed (as children largely determine what types of exploratory play they will engage in and precisely how these activities will unfold) and open-ended (as there are no "right ways" for children to engage in these activities other than for them to be respectfully and inclusively engaged in a manner that furthers knowledge, boosts confidence and instills a love of the learning process).

When looking at the following pictures it is easy to see how intensely focused and involved the preschoolers are in their explorations - and the great joy, satisfaction and pride that they are experiencing as a result of their efforts!
